I had similar occur in my '67 D100. Granted it is an alternator, not generator, but the same symptom. Ammeter indicated very high current flow well after the usual few moments after starting. In the end it was a frayed reference wire to the regulator. Thus the regulator 'saw' low voltage and induced the high charge rate.
