I have a ’51 FF PW on a ground – up rebuild, and I’m finally to the point where I need to align the power trains. While researching power train alignment I came across caster of the front axle. My B-3 series Shop Manual says absolutely NOTHING about caster on the PW, however the TM 9-1808B for WCs says that “The correct caster, with driver and normal load, is one to two degrees; with no load, zero to one degree.” I would really like to have some caster on my axle for highway driving, but I don’t think there is any (caster that is) and I have no idea of how I can measure for it. If I can find out how to measure for it, I can establish correct caster with axle shims (wedges) under the springs. So I have two questions:
How do I measure caster without going to a tire shop or buying a several hundred dollar piece of equipment?
How much change can I expect for the caster when going from rolling chassis (no body parts are on the PW yet) to assembled vehicle (all body parts on and driver in cab)?
