That's just it. They were coated and it appeared intact but was unsightly. When I lightly heated it and then barely scraped the coating the paint came off with it as well. Underneath the paint the steel was already starting rust pits. Apparently it had been going on for a while. The coating on the shields also appears more brittle. Perhaps the heating/cooling cycle of the engine compartment had some effect on the material? The underside of the floor is coated in the stuff and there is even some on the inside of the rocker panels. Once again it appears intact but I would hate to have the truck rusting from the inside out. Messy, smelly job but I guess it should all just come off!
