I reset the pin (after shortening it slightly), by using red loctite and then using a center punch to stake the pin on each side.
After reassembly, the engine would STILL not start. Electrical diagnostics revealed the condenser had died! Replacement of this part resulted in everything good again!
SO, I had an electrical problem, and was ever so close to also having a potential major fuel problem with damage!
