Transfer Case Jack shaft clearance

Hi, I've got a 66 FFPW. I noticed that there is almost no clearance between the non-splined end of the jack shaft and a frame crossmemmber above it. I can just slide a piece of cardboard from a cereal box in between the two. But, it looks like when I drive, the two actually rub occasionally since I see the "end cap" nicely polished and clean of grease and grime. Is it supposed to be that tight a clearance? I tried attaching a link to a pic of the jack shaft. Yes, I know I need to clean it up, but hard to do here in Las Vegas in a development. Thanks.
