Freewheeling hubs, Has anyone crafted them?

I have been considering lockout hubs, but do not really like the look, and especially do not like the fact that they stick out as far as they do.

Realistically I would expect to run freewheeling hubs all summer, and the lockouts would go on in the winter for snow plowing. I don't really need locking hubs for such use, and would prefer ones that look original anyway.

Is there such a creature, or has anyone taken a spare set of hubs to a machine shop to remove the splines on the inside?
