Rebuild engine with blanked out block numbers

Recently came across an ad for a Dodge flathead with rebuild tags. Tried to determine what group it originated from but the owner states the engine numbers are not legible. Was it common place to erase the original block numbers with a rebuild to avoid confusion once bores changed?
