ive seen volvo electric pumps used to drive standard hydraulic steering boxes. they are easy to wire and dont require pulleys and belts...
i've also seen a ww2 scout car that has a torque multiplier cut into the steering wheel shaft. it multiplies the torque from your hand effort to turn the wheels.
