Dualmatic question

I have Dualmatic hubs on both trucks i have and today while rebuilding one set i noticed the two sets were different.Both have overall same height from bottom to top and are two piece unit. One however for lack of better term has a short bottom half with top being taller while on other long bottom half and tall top. Both have the reinforcement metal band at bottom. Is this you think just a change of design possibly to add strength? Not sure which is the older of the two sets.
