79 years ago today, the 1st Marine Division
landed on Guadalcanal, beginning a 6-month campaign that stopped the advance of Imperial Japan and began the long and bloody slog island by island that culminated 3 years later with the 6 August bombing of Hiroshima and 9 August of Nagasaki. I have never yet met a soldier, sailor, marine or airman, who faced with the prospect of invading the Japanese Mainland, did not rejoice over the fact that the A-Bombs prevented that inevitability.
