3: yes - The rear main seal is most likely worn and is leaking. Worn rear main seals are normal for 52 year old engines. Cotton rope seals like the one used in the Dodge flat 6 was good for about 40000 miles (or less) before starting to leak. Usually the leak is not a problem until it gets much worse.
4. You don't. You might put some silicone caulking over most of the hole but leave s drain hole open.

If you are driving in mud and water deep enough to get into the bellhousing (>9") you will need to clean and repack front hubs, drain and refill both axles, transfercase, transmission AND remove & replace the clutch inspection (clean inside the bell housing).

Get the oil level problem corrected.
Buy some CRC brake cleaner and some shop cloth
Drop the clutch cover and clean everything
Replace the cover.
