8 3/8ths vs. 9 5/8ths....

My WC-54 was built in 1942 and I assume it has the 8 3/4" size ring & pinion gears as oppossed to the 9 5/8".

How can I tell without dissassembly? Does anyone make 4.89's for 8 3/4" or
would I have to swap axles or am I just plain ol' SOL
