Clutch free play

After putting in the transmission I pressed down on the clutch pedal and it seems to travel more than expected before engaging with pressure plate fingers. I don't have the return spring on the pedal yet. looking up at the clutch with cover off, How far inches should the throw out bearing move before hitting the fingers.
