What is the condition of the cable from the battery to the starter. It needs to be a heavy 6 volt cable not a smaller diameter 12V cable. Check the ends for corrosion. A bad or too small of a cable will drop the voltage at the coil too low to start. When you quit cranking the engine is still spinning, the coil voltage goes back up and it starts.
