Finally got my NP540 OD tranny put together and installed in my 61 d300 with 361-3 and 4.88 gears with 17.5 rims (tires about 30" tall).
This tire and gear combo results in about the same rpms at 55 as a WC/PW/M37 with 5.83s and 36 inch tires.
It was a bit of a long road to get the right parts to convert and finding the 2nd and 3rd synchro didnt take too long but almost 300 bucks!
The result was totally worth all the headache. Modified GM input shaft, bearing retainer and cant remember which throw out bearing.
Top speed went from 56 to 66 easily and would be fine at 70 all day. Pulls long grades in fifth with ease. 361 truck engine doesn't have much HP but lots of torque.
I am thinking of selling my direct drive NP540. no top cover. They are available on ebay and other places
