Load the pinion shaft hard counter-clockwise before engaging the impact wrench to avoid chipping the gears. I found a breaker bar to be useless on stuck pinion nuts. You can rent electric impact wrenches if you don't have a compressor.
The square headed bolt holds the retaining nut for the outer pinion bearing race. It does not need to be removed to replace the seal.
