They use basically a square tube in a larger square tube with rubber in between as the suspension. The spindle is offset so the loading on the rubber is torsional. I have torsion axles on my camper and a small enclosed trailer, they seem okay and they are compact. I don't like that they are completely independent so on rough terrain they don't distribute the load like a leaf spring axle.
