The nuts go towards the engine. You can not get a socket on them, and they go on pretty tight. I ground a 5/8" box end wrench down to get over them to either tighten them or do the initial loosening. An open end wrench will work to start them or get them off after loosening but trying to loosen them with an open end you are likely to round off the flats. You could google the torque rating for a 7/16 fine thread bolt but short of a long crows foot I don't know how you would get a reading. 3 grunts and a fart are generally sufficient.
