I thought both first series closed cabs DID have marbles. I would seem VERY odd to go back to marbles. My only guess on the switch would be that the marbles were more reflective from the air as they stick out some. Don't think cost would be involved with it.
I never understood the round gauges in earlier open cabs either. Only the last 215 series closed cabs had them while the open cabs had them earlier. I think earlier ambulances and carryall's had round as well. But as we all know, what was "supposed" to be and what "was" are 2 different animals.
