You can make that system extremely reliable with the SS sleeved master and slave that John Geidl sells, more so if you convert it to DOT 5 fluid.
I've put over 200,000 miles on my 62 W300 and another 50,000 on my 66 D100 shorty with 6bt and NV4500 - it uses the stock master and slave. No issues when properly maintained.
