My father gave me a set of Barcalo combination wrenches for my 6th birthday, I still have that set and use it often. Barcalo tools were made by the same company that made Barcalounger furniture.
When I was 11, I bought a set of Thorsen 3/8" drive sockets, which is still my go tools for most of my tasks. I have several recent sets of Thorsen tools, and they are great quality for low prices.
For perspective, I am 71 years old and use my tools frequently and am not easy on them.
