Sounds to me like he has a problem or two (maybe more than two).
1. Check battery cables to see if they are tight, corrosion free at the battery posts and point of connection to starter switch and from the starter switch to the starter
2. Check the voltage of the battery when trying to start. A helper is needed to measure the voltage. If the voltage drops very low then the battery is under charged or dead.
3. Also check battery voltage when engine is running to see if the generator in charging.
