You probably have the 40amp generator which uses the VR17 or VR204 regulator but if you're not sure what the amps are you should have the generator tested. The 30-35amp uses the VR15. Compare how you have it wired to the 6v to 12v generator conversion in the PIF under electrical. Did you polarize the regulator - see installation instructions at the link?
