If it’s not going to be a show vehicle, then I would do the mechanicals first. Get good brakes, check that engine out and somebody on here should have the driveshaft. Obviously, check the front axle out for wear in the wheel bearings and the steering components and pivot points. Check/replace the spring pins and bushings. Then look at the steering box and all input and output links and replace any sloppy parts. Adjust/replace the steering box as needed. Obviously, look at the back axle. Look into the tranny any transfer as needed.
If the truck has been in SoCal most of its life it may not have much rust unless it was on the beach. If the body is decent, I might consider putting a clear coat on it and let it show it’s character. Rust is expensive to fix because of the labor involved. I would make sure all doors and latches work and don’t pop open. Then obviously seat belts. Replace glass and runners as needed. Take care of the seats. I might put some sound proofing in.
What ever you can do yourself will drastically lower the cost.
