I tend to be an "originalist" as well Matt, with a few exceptions. When I built my 6x6 Power Wagon I wasn't too concerned about pure originality because the truck is a mish-mash of 4 different types of trucks. But I still wanted it to look plausibly correct.
I put a V-8 in the 6x6 because I needed more power to drive in the mountains around here, and the cost to rebuild the little 230 flathead was as much as rebuilding the V-8. And then I be stuck driving an 8000 lb vehicle with a 95 hp (at sea level) engine! So it was a matter of function and economics for me. Top speed is still around 50 mph, but I'm able to cruise at 40-45 up Boulder Canyon, rather than 20-25 mph.
I think it's great that guys are making modern rims with the original Budd centers. It keeps the original look of the truck, and makes it possible to use a wide variety of modern tires which are safer to drive and easier to mount. A win-win in my book.
