I do not have my parts manuals in front of me to confirm, but a quick check of Vintage Power Wagon's site indicates that the cable was used up to California serial number 88766179 (1946-1950).
Personally, I like the cable even on newer trucks that came with the rod instead. It does not take much out-of-alignment for the rod to bind and the cable allows the user some "feel". Sometimes with the rod one cannot pull the lever far enough to get the pawl to drop into that next notch. But, with the cable affording a little bit of compliance, it is easy to reach that desired point without the end adjustment being so critical. It is almost like one is clamping the brake under spring pressure.
I think somewhere along the lines the wrong part got put on the truck.
