I was able to squeak out about 1/8" by experimenting w large washers. If I use some 1/4" plate it should give me additional clearance. And yes, some of what I was hearing was the brake.

BTW have you ever used synthetic winch rope? I've read the pros and cons and I don't think I'll be doing much wild-land winching.
