Greasing probably is a good way to avoid the outter lip from folding under, but the grease holds dirt, rust flakes that will wear the knuckle/spindle. If you install dry, they can fold under - see link, and cause more wear. I guess if I can't see the outter lip to ensure the seal, seals correctly, I'm just not comfortable using a double lip seal anymore. I don't know if a double lip seal needs to be used on a wheel hub anyway, we're not sealing a unit that uses liquid oil, only preventing any grease or limited grease oils from entering the brake area. The seal in the image didn't prevent grease/oil from entering and coating the brake shoes, messing things up. At least with a single lip, you don't have to worry about that, and a single lip will do the job.
