No need to pull the pan. Just the distributor and the oil pump. You have to get the oil pump slot slot in the right orientation, the manual shows where, I cant recall off the top of my head. As you install the pump, it has to start in the hole rotated a bit counterclockwise if I remember correctly. As the gears start to mesh, the oil pump body will rotate a bit and if you got it right, the bolt holes will align and life is good. If not, remove it, turn the body of the pump (not the slot!) a little more, or less to get the bolts to line up. When you remove the oil pump you will see the reverse of what I am saying, it will not pull straight out, but will turn slightly as it comes out. The reverse of that is what you are trying to achieve on installation.
