Waking up the old girl

Hi All,
I will soon be waking my truck up from a 2 year slumber once I get the wiring done and Pertronix in. Question, Whats the best way to start up the truck beyond just hitting the starter button? Once I fill the tank with some gas, is there a way of expediently moving the fuel to the mechanical fuel pump without just cranking the engine for a long time? I dont want to put that much stress on the starter. Fill up the float bowl prior to starting? Also what brand battery are you using- I have a 12 volt alternator conversion.
