Maybe he's like me and had such a bad experience with his shop that he doesn't want to take it back. Of course, if that was the case, he would probably not have referred to it as a "competent" shop. I certainly didn't refer to my old shop that way when I got done with them and definitely didn't want to take anything back to them when I got it in my hands. That was the shop I used once, close to 20 years ago, on the strong recommendation of a coworker of mine. There was plaenty of stuff I could have taken back, but he was so horrible to deal with, and I didn't trust that his work would be significantly improved the second time around, so I didn't take it back.
