In the summer of 1970, while driving my 1964 Oldmobile Starfire with the 394 cu. in. motor, I stopped for gas 15 miles from home. It started up ok, but could hardly drag itself off the lot. The local mechanic " Ron", whom I sort of knew though some of the local guys my age took a look at it. By the age of the car and the odometer reading he suspected it had jumped a cog on the timing chain. He loosened the jam nut on the distributor, gave it a slight twist, and tightened it back down again. He explained to me what the issue was and said that should do to get you home, as I assume you will get your local guy "Clarence" to fix it for you.
Clarence changed the timing gear and chain, readjusted the timing, and sent me om my way.
Of course they are both long gone now, but Clarence's young apprentice Steve is still doing my work for me, including the two Power Wagons.
Sure is nice to be able to deal with the little small town country shops, rather than some of the big city guys. But that's just the way it is these days. JJB.
