I'm running a Cummins 4BT in my '53M37. Truck has a Ranger OD (0.73:1) between the stock transmission and the bellhousing on the engine so I can split gears in 4wd. I've also got 4.89 gears and lockers front and rear.
1990 Recon Cummins 4BT is rated 105hp at 2500rpm, 286lb-ft at 1700rpm.
I run 73mph on highway at 17mpg.
Drove in sand at beach on New Years with no problems (900x16 Co-Op Grip Spurs). Mud and snow have not been a problem either.
