It relates to the square of the diameter. If a winch holds 250' of 7/16", it'll hold (7/16 divided by 1/2) squared 1/2", or 49/164 as much, about 3/4 as much, about 190'. It'll hold 49/36 as much 3/8", or about 4/3, about 330', if it hold 250' of 7/16".
And so on.
The square of the diameter is proportional to the cross sectional area which in turn is proportional to the volume of cable per unit length.
