WHEELS....Split Rim vs Solid Rim

What is the advantage in using split rims vs regular solid rims. I believe Ford and Chev run split rims on the 1 ton Pickups.

I have a nice set of Dodge 8 lug Split rims
and am wondering if they would be better ??
on my 2500 Ram 4x4. The stock 8 lug rims supplied with the 2500 Ram 4x4 are solid one piece.

Also why do the older Pickups accept larger
diameter tires (Power Wagon 1100x16) while the Ram 2500 4x4 comes with LT 245/16's and the largest you can clear is LT 275's
