Ummmmm guys ..... are we in this for $ or for the appreciation of these trucks and the ethos that built them?
I think the concept of valuing a whole truck by high-end pricing of the individual parts is a good way to make these trucks unaffordable in a hurry. And ultimately will keep them out of the hands of the people who will save and use them.
I've passed on good deals on several trucks that had parts I wanted because they were restorable trucks that I didn't want to destroy. There are enough junkers that are beyond reasonable salvage for parts.
Let me start again.
This sounds like a $1200 truck to me.
It will likely take a "full monte" brake job, tires, battery, wiring and fuel lines *minimum* to make this roadable; probably more. What - $2000 in parts? [Assume that the labor is "free", because unless you're a professional, its unlikely you'll ever recoup any $ from the time invested.] And I hope you have tools.
Ohhh - you want it painted? More $$$'s (paint alone has cost me >$600) and likely to consume hundreds of hours of labor (if you do it right). And the interior ... !!!
Maybe its better to buy a $4.5K runner and enjoy it, unless you enjoy the restoration/rebuild process (as I do).
Personally, I think the speculative market in PW parts over the last few years has been a very mixed blessing. $900 winches that sit in a garage are not what this is about.
Just my $0.02. Please direct flames to /dev/null
Dave
