Studs will give the most uniform torque, because the nut turns on clean stud instead of a rusty bolt in a crusty hole.
And: last time I changed my h.g. I center punched the head at 1/8 in intervals in a line between the cylinders- this kept the gasket from 'blowing back and forth" between cylinders.
