If you are unable to drop the pan, after draining the oil, take a hanger(any flexible metal rod), make a small loop around the end so it will fit through the oil pan drain hole and bend it so you can scrap the bottom of the oil pan. Pull the loop out after each time you scrap the pan. See what is on the loop. Check different areas of the pan. If you don't hear a metal on metal scrapping noise and it is hard to push or pull, you are moving it on or through sludge.
Don't push and pull the rod more than once in a location before checking it.
