to mount the surge tank (from memory, so may be a bit foggy) in the inner, upper firewall threaded bolt hole and tip the outer
(passenger side) edge of the surge tank down and toward the engine block, so it is mounted crooked (top of surge tank not level). This method also clears the heater hose coming away from the firewall on the Model #36 heater, but looks a bit awkward because the surge tank is angled instead of vertical. This is the way is was done on my long-since-gone dark green 1947 WDX.
