I agree, from what I see everyday in the manufacturing business, that the raw casting probably had several bosses, webs, or other features, and was most likely designed to satisfy many applications. I would venture to guess that each variation created by drilling/tapping various bosses, and/or machining bosses shorter for clearance got a unique part number assigned by the end user. There generally is no time or effort spent drilling, tapping, and machining features that will not be used for a particular application.
One raw casting probably served as a basis to create several unique housings. It may be such that a unit having a housing with a different part number (and from a different application and/or end user) can be found and simply redrilled, tapped, or machined to mimic the W300-W300M original.
the same thing happened with the Vicker's Power Packs that were supplied with the Monroe 3-point Lift Kit for the Power-Wagon. they contain a unique Vickers part number because one additional needed feature was added to an otherwise common Vickers unit, a part number that has yet to be found used by any other customer or found in any Vickers literature.
