“The 1.5:1 transfer case “low” ratio “splits” the transmission gear ratios to give you seven forward speeds, whereas the 1.96:1 ratio transfer case only gives you five forward speeds. This is because the transfer case multiplies each of the four transmission speeds such that the 1.5:1 ratio puts its four speeds between the others, while the 1.96:1 ratio puts its four speeds on top of the others. The advantage of the 1.96:1 ratio is that it gives a very low first gear (the fifth speed); first second and third in high range are about the same as second third and fourth in low range.” Source – Zentmyer’s Power Trains and Interchanges: Military/Civilian Trucks 1941 – 1971 (Dodge), a reprint of the Army Technical Manual No. 9-1808C
