transfer case removal.... pto install

im pulling the transfer case in my 57 due to a noise that sounds like a chipped tooth/whinning when speed increases..im saying its the transfer case because several yolks are loose and i thought usually a transmission issue usually carries up the stick and u almost feel it.. and while im there i was going to slide the trans back to install the PTO.. it didn't seem to go on due to hitting the brake foot pedal the last time i tried.. is there anything im missing.. the trans feels tight.. that being said i don't know to much about the spares i have either..
