However there is some truth to what he's saying.

Early very early six volt starters used a straight cut armature shaft where the drive slides into the flywheel.

Those can be a problem.

Later they spiral cut the shaft so the drive rotates into the flywheel as it slides.

There's starters numbers around with the change somewhere.
