MU-2 Worm shaft

I will be tearing a MU2 winch down soon to replace the worm shaft. The PTO end of the shaft is in poor shape from a broken pin or bolt that was drilled out badly off center and the shaft O.D is worn down a good bit from spinning in the yoke. The shaft is much softer than I expected it to be. I guess by design. This has me wondering what the replacement shafts might be made of.
