Polarize?

So on a '49 FFPW I have replaced a neg. ground 6v generator with a 12v generator from a neg. ground '60 FFPW. I also have a new (made in USA) 12v voltage regulator that I have not installed yet. Does the replacement gen need to be polarized if it had come off a 12v neg. ground truck? Should it be done before I replace the VR? And then should it be used to polarize the new VR? In other words what sequence should I use to install/polarize the parts?
