Also called 'spur gear', every time one tooth engages with another they make a little 'clunk' do to also being slightly disengaged for a microsecond. OTOH, the engagement of Helical gears moves across the teeth form end to end iuntil the net teeth engage at the far end, having two teeth engagesd for theat microsecond. Kinder, gentler tranny, like a Democrat. :^) And quieter.
