In the truck world I typically see engines used within a couple months.

I've read there should be more numbers down by the oil pan rail. Are there on this block?

E440 is a 1969 engine, but I'd expect it to be in a car built in August through October 1968 not April or later 1969.

A car engine expert might feel differently. I'd be interested to hear if there are numbers down the the oil pan.
