What they sold you was not the heavy duty nut which is 1-1/16. Combat rim bolts sell for $4.50 plus, nuts $1.00 plus each. You can buy original WWII bolt/nut combo from France for $5.05 with reasonable shipping.

Fastenal has the nuts you need or MWM for for a cheaper price. If you want stainless which are nice, then Fastenal.
