Is it possible that you have the spring and cups on one end of the draglink mirrored (reversed order) as far as the order that they go together? I know it can be done as the images in the parts lists are confusing. I worked on a '46 WDX locally that was only being used on the farm to check cattle. The owner had the internal parts installed in reverse order but he didn't know it as he never drove it on the road. Was just complaining about how much slop was in the steering when he hit a hole in the ground.
