Front drive shaft installation

When I purchased this '49 B1PW the front driveshaft was not installed. Just a handful of parts. I've cleaned and lubed everything and it appears to be complete. But I've spent hours trying to fit the bearing cups into the forks. Separately the cups fit but will not go when on the u-joint, even with gentle tapping and grease. Is there a trick that I am missing? Should more force be used? Was concerned that the BFR might deform the cups.
